Silicone-based mold releases have been in the molding industry for decades. Parts that stick are still a nuisance in the molding industry. Even with technological advances, mold releases still play a significant role in improving cycle times while continuing to do the job of ejecting those stubborn parts.
As the molds go through its life cycle, it often times develops issues that don’t impact part quality but may create issues with parts ejecting efficiently. Result=longer cycle time. A proper injection mold release agent will likely help extend the life of the mold before it requires significant maintenance or repairs. Silicone Mold Release Agents help with this.
Silicone Mold Release Agent vs Non-Silicone Release Agents
Pros and Cons of Silicone Release Agents
Pros
1) It is the best lubricant. It is slippery and durable
2) Lasts longer
3) Provides the most cycles per spray; efficient.
4) Normally can be used in food-related molding
Cons
1) Not paintable
2) Not recommended if the plastic part will have these secondary operations
3) Not compatible with electrical components
Pros and Cons of Non-Silicone Release Agents
Pros
1) Paintable
2) Recommended when parts have secondary operations
3) Some formulations can be used for food-related molding
4) Can be used with electrical components
Cons
1) Not as good a lubricant as silicone
2) Not as durable as silicone
3) Needs re-application more often
